Investing Upstream: How WHISKids & The 1% Health Pledge Are Transforming Children’s Mental Health

24 October 2026

Jump to

The global youth mental health crisis requires a fundamental paradigm shift. For decades, health systems and local authorities have operated downstream, reacting to crises after emotional distress or mental health challenges have already taken root. At the World Health Innovation Summit (WHIS), we believe the future of health lies upstream. By embedding preventative physical and emotional wellbeing tools into primary education, we equip children with lifelong self-regulation, emotional literacy, and resilience before crisis points occur.

Through our flagship WHISKids programme, alongside flexible investment vehicles like the World Health Service (WHS) Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) and the corporate 1% Health Pledge, impact investors, business leaders, and public health commissioners now have a clear, audited pathway to drive transformative social change.

The Power of Early Prevention: What is WHISKids?

WHISKids is a universal, person-centred physical and emotional wellbeing programme designed for primary school children aged 5–11. Delivered in interactive weekly sessions over six 6-week modules, the curriculum integrates emotional literacy, movement, mindfulness, and circles of support.

Unlike targeted interventions that single out vulnerable pupils, WHISKids is universal. Every child in the classroom participates together, eliminating stigma and building peer empathy.

“I have learnt that I could control my emotions. WHISKids helped me see that.” — WHISKids Participant, Age 9

Audited Impact: A £7.50 Social Return for Every £1 Invested

Preventative health is not only a moral imperative—it is an economic necessity. The WHISKids framework has been rigorously evaluated across primary school networks, reaching over 2,000 children in pilot regions like Cumbria.

The independent Social Return on Investment (SROI) metrics demonstrate exceptional financial and social efficacy:

  • £7.50 SROI: For every £1 invested directly into the WHISKids programme, £7.50 in social value is generated through reduced classroom disruption, improved educational engagement, and decreased demand on early-intervention health services.
  • £36.00 Ecosystem SROI: When integrated into the broader WHIS community model (linking children, workplaces, seniors, and local environmental initiatives), every £1 invested generates £36 in social value.

How to Invest: Flexible Pathways for Impact Capital

To scale WHISKids globally and locally, WHIS provides two distinct financial structures to accommodate philanthropists, family offices, and institutional investors:

  1. Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) via World Health Service (WHS): Capital can be routed through our component fund at Legacy Global Programs (a public 501(c)(3) charity, EIN: 20-8099462). This pathway offers tax-effective benefits for international donors, allows for structured grant-making, and can support governments and institutional investors interested in outcome-based Social Impact Bonds (SIBs).
  2. Direct Investment via WHIS CIC: Investors can partner directly with World Health Innovation Summit CIC (Community Interest Company) to deploy capital into frontline school delivery and local healthcare integration.

The 1% Health Pledge: A Call to Corporate Leaders

Businesses have a vital role to play in the health of the communities where their employees live and work. Through the WHIS 1% Health Pledge, corporations, financial institutions, and asset managers commit 1% of their CSR budget, revenue, or net profits to fund upstream health programmes.

By taking the 1% Health Pledge, corporate partners achieve:

  • Direct Local Impact: Sponsoring WHISKids in primary schools located within their primary operating regions.
  • Audited ESG Reporting: Transparent impact metrics suitable for annual stakeholder and ESG disclosures.
  • Workforce Alignment: Complementary integration with WHISatWork to foster wellbeing across company workforce families.

Partnering with Governments, Mayors, and Health Commissioners

Tackling the child mental health crisis requires bold leadership from public sector decision-makers. WHISKids offers national governments, regional mayors, local councils, and integrated care boards (ICBs) a turnkey, scalable solution that alleviates pressure on Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and local social care budgets.
